Give Thanks for Thanksgiving!

There is one day every year where many American people get together with their family, friends, and maybe even someone that they just met.  They make a big turkey (or a ham for some families) and many other food items.  After the food is all made they sit together at the table and enjoy their feast.  This special day is called Thanksgiving.  Today, families still eat many of those various types of food that have been enjoyed for many years. The average American person eats 4,500 calories on Thanksgiving Day!  On a regular day people eat much less, 2,000-2,500 calories a day which is only half of what people eat on Thanksgiving Day.

The first Thanksgiving was celebrated in 1621. That was 396 years ago!  The first Thanksgiving consisted of ham, lobster, clams, berries, etc. Considering the time when they made those things, it sounds like it would take a while to make. To prepare that food you couldn’t just go to the store and buy what you wanted.  Instead, they had to go hunting, gathering, and have a fire to be able to cook their food. There was so much work that was put into that day. In the end, I bet they had no regret for starting a tradition that has lasted for such a long time.

Have you ever thought what life would be like if we did not have Thanksgiving Day?  I think it would be bad. First of all, we would not have a day off school or work.  I would still be sitting in a chair rather than being at home with my family.  I also wouldn’t get together with my family near the beginning of winter to make a lot of food.  Finally, I wouldn’t be allowed to be lazy all day and instead would be yelled at to get up or go outside.  I am  very thankful for Thanksgiving Day.

Winter Sports At McDowell

There are a lot of sports that McDowell has to offer, but one that lots of the students really like is in the winter. That winter sport is basketball, basketball is very competitive and fun. Another fun sport that McDowell offers is wrestling. Wrestling is a sport that if your goal is to stay in shape, then you went to the right place.

When playing these two sports, you will have to overcome many obstacles. In wrestling your main goal is to pin the person that you are facing, but that can be very difficult. To pin another person you have to get them on their back and make it so that both of their shoulders or shoulder blades are touching the ground at the same time. Another way that you could win is if you have more points than them. You can get points many ways, if you are on the ground and they are really close to pinning you, and you somehow get out of that position that they put you in, and maybe you get them on the ground, that is considered a turn over. You will get a couple points for doing that. There are many other ways to get points but that is the one that will do the best for you.

When playing basketball the main goal is to get the ball into the basket. Honestly I bet that most of the people in the world know the gist of how to play basketball. At McDowell Basketball has to be one of the most legit sports. It is a sport that if you aren’t sure that you want to tryout for the team, then you should not even come to the tryouts. Now to get off of that serious sentence let’s talk about if you do make the team. If you do make the team you will have practices every day, sometimes you might scrimmage a lot, some other times you might run and do lots of drills.
