Facts About The Great Lakes

 

The great lakes are also known as the Gem of The Midwest. The great lakes are made up of five different lakes, Erie, Huron, Ontario, Michigan, and Superior. Many people from all over the country and the world come to see these beautiful lakes that are some of the biggest lakes in the world. Fishing attracts many fishermen to this part of the country, as the Great Lakes are one of the most popular fishing spots in the country.

The Great Lakes border eight states. New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota. It takes up 95,160 square miles and accounts  for 1/5 of the worlds fresh water! Also there is about 170 plus species of fish. The lakes were discovered around 1592 when the French explorer Samuel de Champlain found the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes in dotted with many islands. Some believe that there are at least 30,000 islands out there. The largest island on the Great Lakes is Manitoulin Island. The island of Manitoulin is in Lake Huron. There have been many shipwrecks in the Great lakes. Many storms and reefs can make navigating feel like the hardest thing you have ever done. The most recent shipwreck was in lake Superior, killing 29 people in 1975.

I’ve never been to the great lakes but I’ve always wanted to go. The Great Lakes is on my bucket list. I really want to go because in Ohio we don’t live near an ocean, so this is kind of our ocean. For anyone who is into fishing or lives in the Midwest, this place should be on your vacation list.
