More Than a Tree

1-2-8D3-25-ExplorePAHistory-a0h6b3-a_349It all started in 1774. Chief Logan of the Native American Mingo tribe gave a legendary speech under an elm tree. This is how our school got the name Logan Elm. Many people confuse us with Logan Elementary because they think elm stands for elementary.

downloadThis tree is not just your average size tree, it was the biggest elm tree on the earth. It stood at 65 feet tall, with a trunk circumference of 24 feet. Unfortunately this tree died. It died in 1964 from storms but the legend went on.

The trees former location is marked by a plaque. There are many things that mark this tree and chief, the Logan Elm LoganElm3State Memorial, the Chief Logan Ohio Historical marker, the Logan Monument and more. Schools of the Logan Elm District even have a display with a chunk of the trunk. This is much more than  a tree, it’s history.
