Bees may seem like they are just little jerks that want to sting you, but think again. Did you know that bees pollinate flowers to help them grow? If bees ever became extinct there would be a famine around the world. This is because bees pollinate our fruits, and if we had no fruits to grow, the animals that we eat would die out because every food chain starts with a producer that most likely needs to be pollinated. They also produce honey which is good for you.
Bees are really cool insects! Did you know that bees fly at 15 mph, approximately 5 times faster than humans walk. They have 6 legs. Did you know that bees have front and rear wings (4 wings in total)? A bee has five eyes. Two compound eyes and three simple eyes. I bet you never thought a bee’s anatomy would be so intriguing!
Bees also come in all shapes and sizes. The most common bees are honey bees, carpenter bees, sweat bees, apidae and bumble bees. But in those species of bees there are classifications that I like to think are similar to a caste system. The most important bee in the colony is the queen bee. Sometimes she produces 2,500 eggs a day. Also, there are worker bees. They sometimes die from working so hard! In the winter months, they live longer than when it is warmer. Lastly, drones. Drones are male bees who do not sting, their job is to basically mate with the queen bee. Worker bees take care of drones, so they are awfully high maintenance.
