Hunting with the Seasons

When you are hunting you are surrounded by nature, it is so relaxing and intriguing the way everything works.  Yes, hunting does involve taking the life of an animal, but the true hunters don’t take the animal’s life for the trophy, they take for the food it provides them.  The thing is while you are waiting for the chance of a shot you notice the things around you, and since you’re hunting your surroundings are all natural, non man-made.  Living in Ohio you are surrounded by deciduous forest, (the trees lose their leaves) many animals call these forest home.

During deer season (in the fall) you see all the animals preparing for the long winter.  You see the birds before they head south, the squirrels storing food and making their homes, also the deer go into rut (This is when doe, female deer go into heat, and bucks male deer are ready to breed)  around this time.  Pre-Rut this year is October 18th through the 2nd of November.  Pre-Rut is a good time to hunt because all the deer are moving around.  While you are waiting sometimes you see other animals like, coyotes (which usually means your hunts over) also you see many woodpeckers.  Deer season is the time when plants and animals are getting ready for winter.

There is no season for coyotes, but my dad really likes to hunt them in the winter because there is normally snow on the ground.  Snow makes it easier to see tracks of animals that have passed by and the coyotes are more visible againsts the snow because their coats (
fur) are brown.  In the winter there is less activity from the animals many of the birds are gone and lots of other animals are hibernating.  Coyotes don’t hibernate, and they are scavengers, so an easy meal will more than likely lure them in.  My dad uses a foxpro call to get the coyotes attention, the call has many different sounds but he usually uses a rabbit in distress call or a pup (baby coyote) in distress call. Coyotes are amazing animals they are very smart and they always try to go down wind of their prey before they go to it.

Spring is another season we have in North America, turkey season is during this spring.  In the spring all the animals that went into hibernation are waking up and the birds are coming back.  The trees are growing their leaves back and lots of baby animals are being born.  Being outside in the spring is very refreshing especially if you get cabin fever in the winter.  It is interesting in the all the living organisms are back yet they know to stay hidden.

I love living in North America because I get the pleasure of watching all the seasons and the change in animals behavior, the changes plants make and the changes the world around me makes.
