Halloween Facts, Trends and History

Halloween, a time in America when kids dress up and go around towns and neighborhoods to get candy.  This is known as trick-or-treating which originates during the medieval Britain.  In Ohio, Iowa, and Massachusetts this nights is known as Beggars night.  Some say the saying “trick-or-treat” is based on the thought of, if you don’t give the person saying it a treat they will trick you.   In 19th the century Irish and Scottish immigrants brought the tradition to America.  When it first started people were more into the tricking but as time went on it became more family friendly.

Halloween is also a time to celebrate superstitions such as demons ghost and the scary impossible.  Generally people like to go to haunted houses, the majority of people like to get the thrill of fear.  During Halloween people also like to watch scary movies, I personally don’t but most people do.  If you’re not into scary stuff people like to dress up their pets, it is fun and cute.  Carving pumpkins is another activity people do around Halloween.  After you finish carving your pumpkin you get to call the it a Jack-o-lantern.

People think Halloween originated from Celtic festival of Samhain this was the end of the end of the harvest season for the Gaelic culture.  The ancient culture of the Gaels also believed that October 31 was the day when the boundaries of the dead and the living would open the chances for the dead to come back to wreak havoc. In turn people would light bonfires and put on costumes to ward off ghost.  Kind of ironic considering that’s what people dress up as now.  Later it was changed to all saints day before known as Hallows’ eve eventually shortened to Halloween.
