The Difference Between Llamas and Alpacas

Llamas and Alpacas are a very popular animals. But very few people actually know the difference. They’re are a lot of differences between the two. The appearance of an alpaca is very different from the llama. Also the personality is very different. Many features differ from the llama and alpaca.

The ears on an alpaca are more straight while the ears on a llama are more banana shaped. Also the size of a llama is much bigger than an alpaca. Alpaca fiber is almost as strong as silk and very durable, while llama fiber is more soft on the inside and made with stiffer hairs on the outside. The use of a llama was first made for a pack animal or an animal that carries items on their back. Also llamas are used to guard animals like alpacas, sheep or other small livestock. Alpacas were actually used for their fiber or wool.

One thing that surprises a lot of people is that neither the llama or alpaca spits! Llamas and alpacas only spit in defense or if they think you’re hurting them. So next time you see a llama or alpaca and think, “oh no they’re going to spit at me.” remember this! Llamas and alpacas are very different from each other in many ways. But are still a love able animal to meet.

    1. Kaylin,

Llamas actually do spit, but only in defense. So unless a llama thinks you’re hurting them or if you are hurting them the won’t spit. I hope that answered your question!
